Migrants Use Ride-Sharing Apps to Get Into Country
How should I cross into the US, let me count the ways: walking, being smuggled, climbing the border walls, swimming, late night secret flights, oh, and one more: When all else fails, call a ride-sharing app like Lyft.
Sound silly? Well, according to Fox News, who was on the ground in Jacumba, California, illegal migrants got tired of waiting for border control agents and called for a ride, then “hopped in the car when it arrived.”
If that’s not worrisome enough, a Turkish migrant spoke with Fox News and said he had paid $10,000 to a cartel and that Americans should be concerned by what he had seen. “In fact, American people is right, completely true. Who comes into this country? They don’t know. Okay, I’m good. But how if they’re not good? How if they’re killers, psychopath, else? No guarantee of that.” He added, “Like, no security, no security check, no background check.” The man also said he was worried about crossing the border because “people are not normal.”
Ignoring ICE Detainers
In Baltimore, the County Department of Corrections frequently ignored detainer requests from ICE. Between October 2022 and September 2023, agents filed 81 detainers, but 70% of those were not honored, which means illegal migrants who were arrested were then released before they could be handed over to immigration officials. Additionally, the county doesn’t keep records of migrants who allegedly committed crimes and have detainers against them. Because it is a sanctuary area, the county doesn’t hold individuals for an immigration warrant or even the “suspicion of immigration violations,” the police department told Fox45.
A recent example is Raul Calderon-Interiano, who pled guilty to fourth-degree sexual offense and second-degree assault on April 10 of this year. Judge Jan Marshall Alexander suspended the six-year prison sentence and ordered his release. ICE had previously put a detainer on him, but he was released before the agency could pick him up. The original charges against the immigrant alleged he sexually abused a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old.
Surges in Hotel Room Prices
It’s no secret that hotels have become housing for migrants and homeless, so it shouldn’t be much of a surprise to find out that the cost of rooms for vacationers keeps increasing. In New York City, the average daily rate went up to $301.61 last year, compared to $277.92 in 2022, according to CoStar, an 8.5% increase.
Part of the problem is that hotels and motels are entering programs to house migrants; about 135 of 680 in New York City have done so already, and many of these hotels are in tourist areas. CoStar explained it’s a loss of 16,532 hotel rooms, leaving only 121,677 for travelers in the Big Apple. That’s 2,812 less than before the COVID pandemic.
Notable Quotes
After President Joe Biden enacted executive action on the border, he received both praise and criticism. Here is what House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told Fox News:
“He’s trying to desperately show the American people somehow that he wants to address the issues that he himself created … too little, too late.
“The only reason he’s doing that is because the polls say that it’s the biggest issue in America. Every state’s a border state.”
